And never raised. Barragán's house (the original name of the imposing building) was built in about 1911 and located in what is now the corner between the rags of the Union and Emancipation, began to lose more and more importance in the history of capital as time passed.
Following the closure of the café-bar, the place became a gallery of fashion and then the Richmond, until the late twentieth century bordered on the tragic fate: their living rooms with exquisite art nouveau architecture were invaded by shoe, poultry and nightclub where young and young lost the sense of the rhythm of techno, first, and Tales from the Crypt and the perreo, later.
Although the Palais Concert in 1972 was declared a historic monument by supreme resolution, the business that occupied it were far from even having the intention to respect that status. The irresponsible for allowing poultry damage, shoe and club resulted in its architecture does not want any institution, but the truth is that both the Municipality of Lima as the then National Institute of Culture (INC ), now the Ministry of Culture , share.
Now, almost a century after being built and while the wooden frames of windows succumb to the diligent work of the moths, they say the Palais Concert reborn. But the point of culture as many expect, but as the seat of Ripley shops in downtown Lima.
" CULTURE VS. TRADE?
The announcement that Ripley to invest U.S. $ 8 million to convert the basement and first floor of the Palais Concert in its new store in downtown Lima, a group that call because this is a place dedicated to the culture created a Facebook group called Save the Palais Concert.
With 458 members, the group appealed to the Municipality of Lima and the Ministry of Culture prevent Ripley is made of local, and in its place is a commitment to a cultural center for youth. The truth is that in 2002 the Cultural Association Colonida tried to give this application, but the project did not last long.
"Unfortunately, not all houses and monuments can be converted into cultural centers," says Diana Santander, architect of the Ministry of Culture. She argues that not many investors willing to bet on the restoration of monuments, especially when the minimum investment in them is $ 400 per m2. Santander
also recognizes the work they performed poorly INC in time to oversee the business not to be installed in the building or the damage they cause in their structure.
Ripley is behind this project since September last year. The bill was disapproved in the first instance by the Culture sector, but the commercial presented a new proposal to remedy the comments and the document was finally approved in October 2010.
UNDER LAW
The architect Jose Antonio Vargas, manager of Urban Development of the Municipality of Lima, believes the Palais Concert past means that many will augur a future as coffee or cultural center, but also recognizes that commercial house project is not unreasonable.
"In the outline, Ripley undertakes to restore the place and, in dealing, respect the architecture and original finishes. In addition, Jiron de la Union is a primarily commercial area, "says Vargas.
Ripley has still to submit to the municipality a project detailing the work they would take and the uses of each of the environments. The Palais Concert is half way which could decide, finally, the new destination.
