INTERVIEW TO THE CREATORS OF "THE ADVENTURES OF DUKE DEMENTIRA" (I)
We exceeded our record interviewing this month rather than one or two, but three authors at a time. Thanks to the great kindness of the authors of "The Adventures of Duke Dementira" our questions answered in unison Javier Martínez cartoonist, screenwriter José Antonio "Fideuá" and illustrator and colorist Manuel Cifuentes "Cyrus." This trio rooted in the land near Albacete is the author of one of the titles highlighted by the publishers Planeta de Agostini as one of their best releases of 2010. Us from here and I recommend it for some time and we did not want to lose the opportunity to insist on a 100% quality as national remarkable, editing and content, as any other European title.
Drawing exclusively for readers of LH by Javier Martínez
MAGAZIN LH: In a country where no one can live just about creating comics, how you throw you coincidís and occupied three creators Fideuá other jobs like Cyrus and you to write a play as elaborate as "The Adventures of Duke Dementira?
Javi: The truth is that the match was the easy part. We know practically the whole life, since Cyrus has taught us comic and illustration. I had always drawn as a hobby and do something for 5 or 6 years we plan to prepare a publishable work. Following discussions with the writer (Fideuá), he wrote a script, much to my taste, for he knows well and then was gradually emerging universe "Dementira."
Fideuá: The three of us have known for many years, I think about twenty. Javi day, which I consider a friend, not an employee, I requested a script to draw. I had just published with great success with Vicente Cifuentes and Cyrus "nubilus", and that encouraged me to launch into the adventure again. We had long talked a lot about the work and the knowledge I have of Javi, its tastes and its branches, led me to conceive of the Duke as it is. Then, what to have Manolo (Ciro) for color, it was something natural. From the beginning he was enthusiastic about the project so the thing was to add and add ... and so the result, I believe, has been so good.
Cyrus: I've known since muuuchos years I have been his teacher and now I teach them to me, the goal is to do quality work and a personal stamp that highlights our tastes and trends.
Despite having experience prior to the publishing world, how can that your work was published in a market like ours where many publishers prefer to pay and translate the works of English authors published outside rather than support the work from the start? It does not seem easy.
Javi: I think not, but planet and more specifically the line editor at the time, Ricardo Esteban, bet on us. I had a meeting with him in FICOMIC 2008 and received the news shortly after the acceptance of the project. We also appreciate the creative freedom we had during development, and comic book publishing, carefully enough the truth. There were also at the beginning contact with France and do not rule out possible publication.
Fideuá: Yes, I think the Duke is in the stands, above all, thanks to the vision and faith of Ricardo. He took a chance, fighting for a English comic quality to decent conditions of payment for creators. How easy is to publish only what has worked out, forgetting about the authors here and waiting for them to succeed outside and then ignore them. The hard part, how brave, is gamble for domestic goods worth even if they are strangers ... Unfortunately not everyone thinks like him. National works is none and I do not think that they are given the attention they deserve. Soon as they are promoted and are sometimes unfairly ignored.
Cyrus: For a guy, an editor who has seen the future and believes that comics can be more convinced us of the Metro project and seduced by our work, we show that we seriously and we knew what we were talking, that person is Ricardo Esteban Plaza (Dibbuks). Had contacts in France but could not decide, there the palace is slow work, and we Planeta publishing proposal was interesting, published in Italy and possibly in France by seemed very interesting, unfortunately, we caught the crisis and has not been taken out. Like many works of the Metro line in the future I hope that is possible in one way or another.
As a reader of all types of comic books, comics and graphic novels personally appreciate the originality and that is another thing that surprised me the "Duke." There are cases that are obvious influences or imitation, but in your case, the style is so personal and comprehensive (with touches that range from European to Disney through the best drawn Manga) I have to wonder if there has been a personal level stories or authors that inspire you in particular to reach the touch that has your own book.
Javi: Just looked for quality and originality in a project set in a fantasy world with a touch of steampunk. Was developed during the creation process, a drawing style appropriate for the story, which was polished to be as unique and recognizable as possible, as you say that style has many influences from comics and I like that for years had undergone, from a European style and more specifically French, cartoon and certain types of manga, although it was one of the first styles that I draw and no longer practice, I think that graphic details are always the same. One of the most important influences the concept of the comic (apart from artists and styles) in both drawing and in color is great, "French cinema and in particular that of Jean Pierre Jeunet (" Amelie "," Delicatessen ") which has always fascinated me.
Fideuá: As for the script, as a writer I have to say I've had thousands of influences: all the movies I've seen since childhood, everything I've read (comic books), music I heard in my head, but do not resort to it consciously, appears when you write. In the Duke are Dickens, Ridley Scott, Vangelis, Mignola, Ray Bradbury, Perrault, George Lucas, Victor Hugo and thousands and thousands of musicians, writers, artists and filmmakers ...
Cyrus, I committed myself to them before they even existed in history, their backgrounds and tastes are similar to mine and after reading Fideuá script and see the sketches of Javi I opened a world of artistic possibilities and creative. It is my personal way of dealing with the color that is reflected, influenced by Jeunet and Caro films, the "Sky Doll" of Barbucci and Canepa, the intensity of the colors of the animations Miyazaki and Otomo, treatment of the 80 staff -90 Richard Corben color and especially his style of lighting, stop counting if no ...
read the introduction and epilogue of the book, did you ever have planted you have made the work more as a comic book illustrated how?
Javi: The original idea was that of the comic, but it is true that also began writing novels Fideuá the work, in fact there are chapters written further comprising the universe of "Duke." This project would be a graphic novel, but so far has not developed much. Hopefully one day come to make and publish. As for the epilogue which was added in the last now, I think that connects very well with what would be the second book and delves a bit more to the universe of the Duke.
Fideuá: The truth is that there are several chapters of a novel I started writing. I would have liked if it had been a picture book ... make a version as questions, illustrated book, would be fine, I think we would hope all three. The point is that a publisher is interested in her ...
Cyrus: No, the epilogue is the result of a restructuring of the number of pages, but look, it's a good proposition, would be a magnificent illustrated book, in fact it is a wonderful idea ... umm.
However
the same way and given the dynamism of plot and drawings, you have raised do not make "The Adventures ..." an animated adventure? I guess this would be easier to answer in another country ...
Javi: The truth is that it would be another dream come true, so far beyond our expectations, but who knows? I think it's an ideal project to be made into a film animation, as well as the theme for his drawing style (more cartoon). Many times when reading the script, prior to drawing was imagining it as a movie sequence. Hopefully ever arising from its viability.
Fideuá: Javi and I have often dreamed of seeing the animated Duke, but I think this is a very remote possibility. Only an unprecedented publishing success (which would be more promotion and publication abroad), would make someone take notice of the Duke to bring to the screen.
Cyrus: Yes, but do not know where to start please help!.
How long you took to conclude an album that continued to enjoy in a blink of an eye and know so little?
Javi: In the initial phase of creating characters, settings, devices, sequences, and so we were about 3-4 years as we slowly but surely, after signing the contract, page development, pin-ups, cover and guards took me about 9 months or so.
Fideuá: I think we talked about the script for over a year. That's why it was so easy to write: it was all thought, all in my head. I think I wrote it in two shifts a month each ... more or less. When I introduced Javi Cyrus and loved it, so I just had to make any changes.
Cyrus: In my case as I had to create a specific style for this story about four to five months. Precisely
taking into account the work that leads up to even the thinnest book when will the new adventures of Dementira, Eddy and Totí and how many volumes you had thought to tell the whole story?
Javi: We hope that Metro's faith in us and at Duke. The full story would include a trilogy or four volumes at the most. The arc is created and work started in the second volume. Story with the preface written and noodle dishes and I am in the midst of creating new characters, settings, artifacts and sequences. I can you say that this new volume would be a little darker and darker than the first and will be released many details of the story.
Fideuá: Today, I even difficult to have below. Metro has the last word and I think that for now are not very interested. English comics sold in Spain recently, perhaps because, as I said before, paid little attention. Our hope of salvation would be publication abroad, which would enable us to continue with the series, which I had thought three or four volumes. The truth, I had very bad experiences in the past by having to tell stories in far fewer pages than needed, and I swore I would not go with Duke. If one day the series continues, I will give the pages the characters ask me, not restricted for reasons unrelated to the story (usually publishers) ... or at least they try.
Cyrus, not up to us and I hope that Metro trust us, believe that quality is critical if we are given the opportunity in the near future. We are engaged in the development of the second part, we hope to improve and refine our work to reach a wider audience.
Do you personally sell your creative freedom to be a big name in the U.S. comic book industry or the Franco-Belgian market?
Harvey: Do not dismiss the idea of \u200b\u200bworking in the future for the Franco-Belgian market, it attracts me much that there is published and the culture of comics that have more than having a familiar name ; also think it is difficult to draw something that is very alien to you and that "he never saw." Should you find time to post there I would like to go with a project that creatively fill me.
Fideuá: Never say I will not drink this water. The truth is that I have trouble working on something that does not create. Get too attached to what I write, but I think you need to have work but I like less work. Actually be professional, contrary to what some believe, that is. I would like to further develop my personal projects, but, if need sue me, I think I adapted. As far as being a household name, with writer and English, I think that there is little danger ... an artist may well come to fame, but in the case of a writer I see it much more difficult.
Cyrus: Actually there are important things to note: if you want to survive just to make comics you have no choice to be part of an industry, be part of the chain, and many of them slaves, but paid month-end bills and earn more money in a short time, indeed a bundle, there is only one problem, another come from behind, young and strong that you replace is the problem of the chains, you do what you want if what you can to survive, this is unfortunately at odds with the creative process, but pays the bills at the end of the month, and houses, car and insurance. Try that in Spain alone with the comic ... see you on the unemployment line, or making or decorating Storyboards pubs or if I contradict the purists who say there are only outsiders who are taking jobs and they never would otherwise. But there are those who manage to penetrate to their characters and make a personal work that appeals to many people, many of them have spent years trying to support their work (which is what the writers say) or color value as a work of art member of the final result (which tell what the colors) or the balance and final outcome of the drawing (to be told the inking). It all depends on your creative ability, the comic is a field in the world illustration but it is a field I am an illustrator, I do not think I could never be content with doing just comics, too much blood boils me to sit still.
